Chace Children’s Discovery Library

The Chace Children’s Discovery Library at Providence Public Library offers a captivating and enriching environment, providing a joyful learning experience for young children, their families and caregivers.

 

Research

Besides the Providence Public Library, I also visited different Library around Providence, and children museums to understand the function and purpose of other children public spaces.

Mission

Design an inclusive children library furniture that will empower children to bring their stories to life, and enable learning throguh play.

Core Principles

Play

All librarians agreed on the focus of learning through fun activities. From reinacting stories to develp children’s creativity or playing with legos to develop their analytical skills.

Stories

Books are still one of the main focus of libraries, so narratives can be found through out the shelfs. Through them, children learn about the world as well as grow their imagination.

Resources

Libraries have become a treasure chest of assets. it offers underprivillaged children valuable equipments such as computers or toys.

Community Space

Children’s Library is an environment where children come together and hang out. Children between the ages of 0 - 15 and parents utilize the space to socialize with one another.

Initial Sketches

I initally explored traditional furniture forms to maximize space and utility. However, through examination with the core principles, i discovered none of these forms focused on the principle of stories telling.

Playful blocks

Children playgrounds are the prime example where fun and stories are incorporated into learning. With various interactive elements like gear boards, clock faces, and slides, kids learn about the world around them through interacting and playing in different environments.

Inter-exteriors

Using clay models and sketches, I was able to explore architectural forms that can encapsulate its users and allow them to create a world of their own without isolating them from the outside space.

Attachments

With a basic structure decided, I sketched out and modeled a variety of possible attachments. These were inspired by characters or environment in children’s books.

An interactive library structure that allows children to build their imagination into reality. They learn through this creative process of story telling.v Kagu hugs the children and encases them in a world they build for themselves. The yellow neutral color allows it to take on different roles. Different attachments adhere via velcro in any orientation. With even just six attachments, there are endless possibilities.
